Announcing the Merger of A&M
Green Power Group
"Family Tradition Living On
A&M Green Power was created when two of the area’s largest, long time John Deere dealers merged, Macedonia Implement, operated by the McCready family since 1899 & Athen Implement, operated by the Athen family since 1941. In June 2006, the two families joined forces along with Jeremy Ostrander and the Duda family to continue the tradition of providing unbeatable sales, service and parts to Southwest Iowa and the surrounding states.
In 1899, Macedonia Implement Company was started on main streetMacedonia by Charles McCready. The store sold John Deere and McCormick Deering farm equipment, buggies, harnesses, and windmills. Later they also sold Overland and Dodge cars. The decision had to be made to go either with John Deere or McCormick Deering. The decision was for the long green line. Today that decision still is the main force of the McCready family.
Over the years, five generations of the McCready family have managed the business, including Charles McCready who died 1940, his son Ralph (Cubby) McCready who died in 1977, Ralph’s Son Tom, who died in 2001. Now Tom’s sons Shoan and Brien manage the business along with Shoan’s son Eric. Shoan’s wife Melinda also works in the family business. Tom’s wife Sue and Tom’s sister Joan are involved in the business.
Athen Implement traces it’s beginning to January 10, 1941 when Orville Athen succeeded J.E. Good & Company as the John Deere dealer in Hamburg, Iowa.
Orville started working in the dealership for J.E. Good in 1936 to help pay for his out-of-state tuition for high school. In 1941, when Orville was just twenty-two years old, he purchased the Hamburg dealership. He is believed to be the youngest person to be awarded a John Deere contract.
Orville married his wife, Jean, in 1943 and the two of them worked side by side in the dealership. Their son, Don, joined the business full time after graduating from the University of Iowa in 1972. Don married his wife Jody in 1976 and she is an integral part of the family business.
The business was incorporated in 1978 with Don becoming the President. Athen Implement, Inc. moved to its present location near Interstate 29 in December of that year. Orville stayed active in the business until his death in 2004.
Both the McCready and Athen families have always had the vision of providing quality equipment, cutting edge technology, and the highest standard of customer service with family traditions.
Throughout the years, both families were able to change with the times. They have bridged the era from horse drawn equipment and steel wheeled tractors to satellite guided tractors, combines, and sprayers by staying on the leading edge of technology and innovation.
In 2004, the Athen and McCready families started looking to what is the next best step in keeping their business on the cutting edge. This is when they started talking about joining forces to bring the best service to their customers. They brought Jeremy Ostrander into the business to help facilitate this move. Jeremy provided them leadership skills they needed to get the job done.
In June 2006, the newly created A&M Green Power Group was created officially when Athen Implement and Macedonia Implement merged together buying Southwest Iowa Equipment to combine four locations together.
