Mid-States Equipment was founded by Herbert W. Onstot in 1949 in Lake View, Iowa, where the company’s headquarters remains today. The business began as a retailer and wholesaler of farm chemicals, fertilizer and “first generation” weed sprayers. In these early years, Herb worked tirelessly to build the business on strong relationships, superior service, and innovative products.

In the 1960s, Mid-States began manufacturing their first original products that complemented their retail and wholesale business. The Red Devil spring tooth tractor-mounted harrow came first and soon after, the Red Devil coil tine plow-mounted harrow. The company’s most popular product would become their Spring Devil Danish tine row-crop cultivator.

In 1972, Herb’s son, Scott Herbert Onstot, joined the business. Scott began working in the shop cutting iron and drilling holes, but would soon become responsible for the in-demand row-crop cultivator and packaging parts for shipment. Herb (and the cultivator manufacturing) retired in the mid 1980s and in 1986, Scott took over as President of Mid-States to carry on the family tradition of hard work and superior service.

Through the years, the company has slowly expanded to represent added quality manufacturers and “cultivated” increasingly more strong relationships with dealers. Today, Mid-States Equipment is a successful distributor of specialized farm and ranch, forestry, light industrial, recreational, irrigation, and lawn and garden product lines. Now with the addition of third generation family support, the company looks forward to continuing its tradition of success for many years to come.
