What we Are
How Farms Work was started in 2012 by Ryan Kuster, a then 19 year old farmer in Potosi, Wisconsin on his grandparents' dairy farm. In 2014, their farm was converted to raise beef cattle, alfalfa, corn, and soybeans to keep up with other expanding farms as milk prices continued to plummet.
Ryan now farms with his family on their 1,200 acre beef and crop farm. Originally intended to be a how-to resource for anyone interested in farming, How Farms Work has become one of the most watched Farm Vlogs in the world with over 125,000 subscribers and over 39 million views as of January 2018.
In 2008, Ryan uploaded his first 4 videos to YouTube. After logging back on 4 years later in 2012, he realized that his videos had an astounding 14,000 views. This meant to him that people were clearly interested in agriculture, however when he searched for farming videos on the social platform, very few farming videos were found. Ryan realized that if he made more videos, over time he knew that the videos would collect more views and would hopefully cater to a new audience online that no one had yet effectively delivered to. Thus, the concept of How Farms Work was created.
